So What is Hypnotherapy ? |
 |
|
HYPNOTHERAPY is the gentle and relaxing application of hypnotic techniques in such a way as to bring about beneficial therapeutic changes. An external influence - the Therapist -assists in activating the inner resources of a person - You the Client - in order to achieve realistic goals. The problems that HYPNOTHERAPY is best placed to help fall into the following broad classes:
Thoughts & ideas: People can suffer from thoughts of low self-esteem, or obsessive thoughts about someone or something. They may not be able, for example, to get out of their minds the idea that they are suffering from an illness, despite medical reassurance, or that a partner is unfaithful. HYPNOTHERAPY can help change such ideas.
Fears & Phobia's: People often experience an irrational fear of a variety of insects, animals, objects or situations and HYPNOTHERAPY is particularly renowned for its effectiveness in assisting sufferers to overcome these distressing and inhibiting conditions.
Emotions & Feelings: People can suffer from a wide variety of distressing feelings such as panic attacks, jealousy, guilt, anger, depression, or inadequacy. Whatever the problem feeling, HYPNOTHERAPY can deal with it more specifically than can a drug, and without harmful side effects.
Habits & Compulsions: People can find themselves in the grip of many habits that they seem unable to control, from something like nail-biting or smoking to more deep-seated compulsions, such as agoraphobia (fear of open spaces). HYPNOTHERAPY, using hypnotic techniques can help to remove habits with precision, and again with a total freedom from side effects.
Stress Management: People in all walks of life are now suffering more stress related illnesses than ever before. Using HYPNOTHERAPY, and also teaching Self-Hypnosis stress management techniques I can help you to easily reduce your anxiety levels, and manage the stress in your life to improve your health and well being, and help you avoid the damaging effects of too much stress .

What Can You Expect to Happen ? |
 |
|
Perhaps the most important thing is that you can expect to feel comfortable and at ease with me your Therapist. This is of particular importance in HYPNOTHERAPY. For this reason I am always happy that you are able to book a single assessment session with me at first. The first 20 minutes of this initial consultation are completely free of charge, after this time you only need to decide if you want to proceed with your assessment consultation once you are completely happy with all aspects of the HYPNOTHERAPY process.
During your assessment I will ask you about the problem and notes may be taken. To help you I will need to find out certain necessary information both about the problem and about yourself. (All information is discussed informally with me on a strictly confidential basis).
The next stage is hypnosis itself which normally takes place on your next appointed visit so you can feel comfortable and completely at ease with all aspects of the HYPNOTHERAPY process, which can be better likened to an interesting and comfortably relaxing journey. To start your journey moving in to an effortlessly, calm and relaxing state which we call hypnosis there are a variety of methods of inducing this beneficial and natural state of mind. You will find that I will tailor the most effective and relaxing method to best suit you for your maximum success. An example of a typical hypnotic induction could be as follows;
You are led, by means of my gently guiding voice, into a state where your body and mind are relaxed and nearly asleep, yet you are still aware (a relaxing state of hypnosis can be better likened to remembering the pleasant experience of day dreaming, which often occurs when we are engaged in a dull or repetitive task that requires little concentration). And to an onlooker it might seem as if you are totally asleep but in fact, though you will normally feel very relaxed, you will remain awake, enough to be aware. Also awake will be those parts of your mind which I will be working with to induce beneficial changes for you, now and in the future. This may mean that you will be picturing or visualising, or perhaps just sensing with feelings or sounds the recognisable experience of being in a gentle day dream, the things which are being spoken of, and that you may experience are associated with the pleasant feelings that may be linked to that experience.
REMEMBER that if at any time you feel uncomfortable and want to terminate the session, then you will be perfectly capable of doing so.
The fourth stage, after the Hypnosis proper, is when you may discuss any experiences that you have had during the session. This is often an important part of the of the process during which you can reflect looking back on your journey when we debrief at the end of each hourly session.

There is, of course, a considerable variation in the difficulty of the various problems and there is no general rule which makes it possible to say how much improvement can be achieved and in how much time. Many simple problems can often be overcome completely in as little time as just four 1 hourly sessions, which can be seen to be extremely quick and effective in comparison to other more demanding or invasive solutions. In addition even more difficult and complex problems can equally be treated very successfully and effectively without side effects, but may require more therapy time to achieve your desired outcome. As a professional hypnotherapist I will always aim to give you a fair assessment of how much improvement you can expect and how many sessions may be needed by the end of the first hypnosis session. However if the problem is more complex then we will both need to jointly review progress from time to time. Many, many people throughout Europe & America for over 100 years have enjoyed successful outcomes to debilitating conditions & problems through the appropriate use of HYPNOTHERAPY, which in turn has given them major improvements in the quality of their lives. The efficacy of HYPNOTHERAPY has been additionally recognised in the UK as appropriate to 'complement' conventional medicine in the House of Lords Parliamentary Committee report investigating complementary and alternative medicine, which published it’s findings in the Spring of 2001.
Whilst HYPNOTHERAPY has been found to be beneficial for many people as in all things there is no guarantee that it will be successful in every case. I therefore offer you hypnotherapy treatment within the scope of my professional training, and best endeavours, and with the aim of obtaining you the best therapeutic outcome, but with the aforementioned caveat. I am available by private appointment to help you on a 'one to one' basis overcome a wide range of conditions & problems. I do this by helping you access the tremendous hidden inner resources of your mind to help you achieve successful and beneficial changes now, and in the future. My goal therefore is your success.
